Last week NAFI Member Robert Morgan #221443 an ATC controller from Florida and also an active CFI helped talk a passenger through landing a Cessna Caravan successfully without previous aviation experience.
One of NAFI's core principles is to recognize the amazing achievements of our members and the flight instruction community, and commend Mr. Morgan for his amazing skills as both a ATC controller as well as a CFI.

Episode Sponsor Pilot Edge, visit their website (www.pilotedge.net) for more information on SimVenture July 14th through 17th
For two years in a row PilotEdge has been proud to present SimVenture which is similar to the flight procedures associated with EAA’s famous EAA® AirVenture® Oshkosh™ ¹ and allows pilots to fly into Oshkosh, with actual Oshkosh air traffic controllers, using a flight simulator.
Each year, over 10,000 aircraft flock to Oshkosh, Wisconsin’s Wittman Regional Airport for EAA’s AirVenture event. In order for Oshkosh’s airport to accommodate such an influx of air traffic throughout the week, EAA works closely with the FAA and the National Air Traffic Controllers Association to publish specific VFR arrival and departure procedures which pilots are required to follow.
These specific VFR procedures are published in a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) and require pilots to conduct non-standard approaches and maneuvers into and out of the airport, while listening to fast-paced air traffic control and flying closer to other aircraft than most pilots have ever flown before.
PilotEdge’s SimVenture event is similar to EAA’s actual AirVenture event thus giving pilots an experience that is comparable to flying into and out of Oshkosh using the real NOTAM procedures.

We’ve all heard the term gamification, but what does that really mean? The science of game design is about leveraging challenge to drive engagement, satisfaction and motivation. Interestingly, game design techniques map incredibly well to flight training.
By understanding game mechanics, the building blocks of games, you’ll add to your toolbox a valuable set of techniques to keep your students engaged and on track to certification. New training products are coming online which leverage game design and technologies that may enable a new paradigm in flight training. One in which pilots can reach certification at lower costs, while being better prepared to safely utilize the privileges their certificate provides.
Join game designer, pilot and founder of TakeFlight Interactive Brandon Seltz, and gold-seal CFI Mark Thompson on a journey to discover these new tools and techniques to give your students the best training experience and outcome.
Former Director of Scenario Development for Redbird Flight Simulations and game-designer on Microsoft Flight Simulator, Brandon and his team are working toward a vision of how game-based learning can revolutionize pilot development. This vision is influenced by Greg Brown’s 1999 article “Tomorrow’s Lesson” and his foresight of the “smart simulator”. A long-time private and glider pilot, Brandon is proof in the power of simulation in training.
Mark is a gold-seal flight instructor who holds an ATP and is type rated B737 and A320. He attended the University of North Dakota (UND) where he started instructing in 2003. His experience at UND’s highly regarded structured program provided valuable insights into pilot development.
After UND Mark worked to implement RNP AR instrument approaches for airlines all over the world. After nine years away, he chose to get back into flight instruction at a fast growing and forward thinking part 61/141 flight school. There he met Brandon, the TakeFlight Interactive team, and their vision for the future of flight training. Mark jumped at the opportunity to influence the future of pilot development through the power of game-based instructional design and broad access to TakeFlight’s virtual flight instructor.

Have you ever thought of using a Flight Risk Analysis Tool for flight instruction and your students/learners? Elizabeth Vulgamore is looking into just that! We are trying to find out if there is something that CFIs use already for this purpose, or if not, what should be included in the risk analysis list? Please listen and submit your ideas to nafi@nafinet.org

It is time you get better acquainted with the leadership of the National Association of Flight Instructors, and to do that, what better way than to interview our Board Members to understand their background and what drove their desire to be on the board in the first place.
Today's interview is with Tom Doral.
Tom Dorl has been flying since he was 16 years old and learned to fly at an Air Force base in New Jersey.  It was at this aero club, flying C-152s, that Tom cemented his love for flying.  He attend an aviation university in Ohio and secured a commission in the USAF along with a degree in Aerospace Technology.  Tom completed fixed wing and rotary wing pilot training flying the T-37, T-38, UH-1 and HH-60G and was one of the first operational USAF pilots to fly the HH-60G PaveHawk.  Tom served over 25 years in the USAF flying mainly combat search and rescue missions in many overseas
locations saving the lives of others; additionally he taught powered flight to USAF Academy Cadets in the Cirrus 20 (T-53).  He has been an active and dual rated flight instructor for over 22 years, is an active FAASTeam Representative and presenter, CAP member and published author.  He holds a CMEL, CFI, CFII in both single engine airplanes and helicopters as well as a Pt 107 UAS Commercial certificate.

Chapter 2 Summary. The Learning Process – Learning is Natural, Teaching is an Art, and The Exchange is a Gift (Purchase Mike's Book here)
The psychology of learning involves many things including motivation, the learning cycle and communication. In chapter 2 we examine the learning cycle as a simple model to help us lend clarity to the seemingly chaotic learning process. The learning process seems chaotic when viewed from the outside because every learner will approach their learning in different ways. Viewed from the perspective of the learning cycle, we see that it is not chaotic after all, but a fluid process dependent on an understanding of how learning truly occurs. True deep learning only occurs where learners have time to openly grapple with new content. The four part learning cycle is a guide through the new content, yet at the same time allows any learner to grapple with that content in their own way. This is the beauty in this simple model.
Mike Thompson has been a flight instructor since 1979. During eight years with the US Coast Guard, he crewed fixed-wing planes and helicopters conducting flight instruction part-time.
After active duty, Thompson completed his master’s degree in education while teaching airframe and power-plant mechanics for the Wisconsin Technical College System. Thompson went on to spend eight years as an instructional-design consultant and worked on projects in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Kuwait.
He then moved into college administration holding director, assistant dean, and dean positions. He retired in 2013 and continues to teach and fly as a flight instructor out of New Smyrna Beach, Florida.

Certified flight instructors are rarely educators. Many see instruction as a stepping-stone to the next level of their flight careers and assume that merely telling is the equivalent of teaching. We tell, we show, but we rarely teach—and in failing to do so, we do our students a disservice. This mistake is detrimental to both students and the aviation industry.
Join veteran flight instructor and educator Mike Thompson as he applies the principles of educational psychology from the FAA-H-8083-9A Aviation Instructor’s Handbook to the art and science of teaching.
